Ik zit nu met alle vijf zijn albums in mijn handen. Ik zou ze het liefst allemaal draaien nu. Elliott Smith heeft op 34-jarige leeftijd zelfmoord gepleegd. Godverdomme.

Echt? Jemig, wat een sukkel.
Ik vraag mij wel eens af waarom alle kunstenaars en mensen die mooie dingen maken zo'n verrot leven lijken te hebben. Als ik ook kunstenaar wordt, heb ik dat dan ook, later: een verrot leven?
Misschien moet ik maar gewoon soaps volgen en naar Boggle kijken, verder niets. Dan blijf ik gelukkig.

"lijken te hebben", inderdaad. d'r zijn er genoeg die geen zelfmoord plegen, natuurlijk. maar dat valt dan minder op, dus daar hebben we niet over (ofzo). misschien plegen bouwvakkers (ik noem maar een zijstraat) procentueel gezien wel veel vaker zelfmoord, maar daar worden mensen geen fan (niet in grote getale althans).
om iemand dan maar meteen een "sukkel" te noemen vind ik nogal bekrompen, eigenlijk.
nee, nee, weet je wel dat 't laagste percentage aan zelfmoorden onder schoffelaars is?
en 'bekrompen' omdat ze m sukkel noemt? ik geloof niet dat irene dat zo bedoelde...het was meer een soort lieve sukkel die irene dacht, denk ik. nee, niet lief, nou ja. in ieder geval niet zoals jij 't hebt opgevat nu...

I heard the news this morning that Elliott Smith had passed away. It is a terrible loss for myself and many of my friends, who knew, worked and hung out with him. Needless to say he was one of the best songwriters of our day and a formidable musician. He was also soft spoken, intelligent and extremely humble. He had an acute sense of justice. At one of my shows last year he tried to intervene with security who were harrassing a kid, and was in turn beaten and arrested by them. We know he?s had his struggles over the years and I was heartened by word that he was on an upswing and preparing a new album. We even talked a few times about getting together and making some music when I got off tour. Nobody was to know what would happen, but I am grateful for the times we got to tour and hang out together. He will be missed and the ramifications of his absence will long be felt. - Bek
I have a good memory of him, from when I recorded a few songs for the xo album: we were at Sunset Sound, and on a break we were playing basketball, and he had all these wigs and costumes. He brought out this pirate hat that somehow had an eye patch built into it. Anyway, we devised a game where we all had to take turns doing a lay-up wearing the pirate hat and patch, and we each had to do our best pirate impersonation while trying to make the shot. It was ridiculous and somehow so sweet! At least he had a light side in there at some point. I'm going to hold on to that image of him hobbling towards the the basketball hoop in pirate garb, shouting, "Ahrrrrr!", and laughing. - Joey Waronker, longtime drummer for Beck

Beck will be playing the Elliott Smith Memorial show on November 3rd at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. Other artists signed on include Grandaddy, Radar Bros, Rilo Kiley, Beth Orton, Bright Eyes, Future Pigeon, and special guests. All artists will be doing short sets, covering Elliott's tunes. The excellent short film about Elliott, "Strange Parallel" directed by Steve Hanft, will also be screened. Tickets are onsale now through Ticketweb, with all proceeds going to the Elliott Smith Foundation for Abused Children.

Ik heb naar mijn weten niks gewist. Misschien moet je dan nog een keer zeggen wat je wilde zeggen?
Het was iets van 'ja, de sukkel (maar dat mag ik dus niet zeggen), stom' ofzo. Niet heel diep. Kan gemist worden. Ik vond het alleen zo gek. Maar ik zal het wel gedacht hebben ipv geschreven.

Het zo voor mij opnemen. Nou ja, inderdaad. Ik bedoelde meer iets als 'zonde' ofzo. Niet dat hij heel erg dom is, daar kan ik niks over zeggen natuurlijk.
als we geen wetenschapper moeten worden, omdat we dan ongelukkig zijn en als we dat ook zijn als artiest, waar zullen we dan naartoe?

U Dutchies can be so weird sometimes.. Like, ive read some of your posts and neither of you, oh wait, i do think some of you do, seem to understand the true beauty of his music... and not just that, also his tragedy, his pain, his 'being' in general.. i for one have been a fan, if u could call it that, for a long time now and its awkward to see how indifferent and sarcastic (even if its not meant to be sarcastic.. death is not something to make fun of)some of you are. Now, please note i am not intending to hurt anyone by saying his, its just the way i feel. peace and xo.
Who here is being indifferent and sarcastic? I have too been a fan for a long time now and I don't see why you would understand the true beauty of his music any better than me or anybody else that replied.
