I currently have five delay pedals on the pedal board for my band Moonwatch, and I usually use multiple delay pedals simultaneously. I’ve dreamed of being able to synchronize the tempo of my Boss RE-20 Space Echo, DOD Rubberneck and Electro-Harmonix Canyon delay pedals, but sadly the Boss RE-20 doesn’t have a tap tempo connector. I tried the newer Boss RE-202, because it does have a tap tempo connector, I just prefer the sound and general simplicity of the RE-20. And then I found posts on Reddit from people who had added a tap tempo connector themselves! They just didn’t explain exactly how they did this. But last week, and with the help of a friend, I figured out how to do this, and I have now modified both of my Boss RE-20 pedals! I plan to use a Disaster Area micro.clock, but any other tap tempo pedal that supports ‘normally open’ operation should work. This modification will even allow an RE-20 to act as a tap tempo pedal master for another delay pedal that supports ‘normally open’ tap tempo. By tapping a tempo on your RE-20 you can set the tempo for the RE-20 and another delay pedal, so if you just want to sync two pedals, all you need is a simple patch cable. You’ll also be able to still change the tempo using the RE-20’s built-in tap tempo pedal. This mod is a total win! If you’re interested in this mod, you can find my instructions on GitHub. We were already very pleased with this foundation of live takes, and recorded some additional parts in Studio Pinguïn (my home studio) and the bunker where we rehearse. The resulting album will be called Myriad Eyes \ Myriad Other, and will be released in January 2024. To celebrate this first full-length Moonwatch album, we’ve teamed up with our friends from Thistle Sifter for a double album release show at De Nijverheid on Saturday January 27th, 2024. I was in the audience for a Java security talk by Brian Vermeer (NLJUG board member, Java Champion, Snyk developer advocate, Foojay community manager), when during a live demo I saw his environment variables getting printed on the console on the venue’s enormous cinema screen. And among them was a GitHub token. I poked my colleagues sitting next to me and said: “I know this is a demo, but could that be a real token?” I had a laptop with me, and decided to check it out. The talk was being recorded and broadcast live via the internet, so I could just grab the token by rewinding the live video feed a bit. I logged into GitHub and replaced the token in my GitHub cookie with the one that was just broadcast live, and sure enough: I was now Brian Vermeer on GitHub. Two-factor authentication didn’t save him, with a valid token you’re already past the authentication stage. Brian was just explaining about deserialization gadget chains, so I decided to make a small change to the repository for his personal website, pretending to be Inspector Gadget. And surely enough Brian had made sure his website automatically gets updated whenever changes are made in the Git repository. I informed Brian of his mistake right after his talk. He was a good sport about it and proceeded to invalidate all tokens that had been exposed. He also decided to not rewrite his website’s Git history when restoring his website, so he left Inspector Gadget’s commit in there. We zaten alledrie op dezelfde middelbare school. Niek en ik speelden elektrische gitaar, en Jan speelde piano. Een bassist en drummer hadden we in het begin niet, maar we hadden wel een Roland E-16 Intelligent Synthesizer die die zaken voor z’n rekening kon nemen. We noemden onze band Scandal. Dat klonk wel rock ‘n roll. Bij mijn ouders thuis namen we met behulp van een loodzware PA-mixer en een cassette deck onze eerste nummers op. Een cassette met de wonderlijke titel Wonderful Ketchup - Live at TK’s. Op school werd een (jaarlijkse?) avond georganiseerd waarop leerlingen mochten optreden en dat gingen we dus doen. Volgens mij in eerste instantie alleen met z’n drieën, uiteraard ondersteund door de Roland E-16 Intelligent Synthesizer, maar later ook met bassisten en drummers van vlees en bloed. Repeteren deden we bij LVP, maar een echt stabiele bezetting hadden we volgens mij nooit heel erg lang. Maar de bassisten die we hadden heetten wel doorgaans Bas. Het waren de jaren 90, dus we deden clean met chorus in de coupletten en distortion in het refrein. En Niek speelde in principe de gitaarsolo’s. Met kerst speelden we ook alle drie in de band die het Community Singing event ondersteunde. Met de hele school keihard kerstliedjes zingen in de ronde hal met de trap en de rondgang erboven waar je niet met z’n allen op mocht gaan staan springen, maar wat dan toch gebeurde. Jan, Niek en ik waren de vaste kern van Scandal. En Niels was onze manager en cameraman, en hij maakte een tekening die we op t-shirts lieten drukken. Die t-shirts droegen we dan zelf. Na de middelbare school verhuisde ik naar Utrecht en Scandal hield op met spelen. Er schijnt nog een complete filmopname te zijn van tenminste één Scandal optreden, maar die heb ik zelf (nog) niet in bezit. Dit speelde zich allemaal zo’n 25 jaar geleden af in Leiden. En komende zaterdag staan we voor eerst sinds die tijd weer met z’n drieën op een podium, als Scandal. En dan spelen we bij The Stream & Friends bij Gebr. de Nobel een paar van onze hits van toen. Geheel in stijl samen met een bassist en drummer waar Niek en ik nog nooit samen mee gespeeld hebben. House, trance en andere mainstream elektronische dansmuziek was (nog) niet aan mij besteed. Ik herinner me een schoolfeest waarbij ik bij elk four-to-the-floor nummer demonstratief stopte met dansen. Ik ging stil staan op de dansvloer tot er weer een nummer kwam dat mijn goedkeuring wel kon wegdragen. IDM had ik misschien wel net ontdekt, maar dat werd niet gedraaid op schoolfeesten. En daar viel ook niet altijd op te dansen. In de jaren 90 kregen we thuis ook computers die krachtig genoeg waren om multitrack audio mee te bewerken. En om de een of andere reden hadden ik en mijn gitaarspelende vriend een cd-rom met wat samples. Dus ik en een vriend dachten: die stampmuziek is zo simpel, dat kan iedereen. Het nieuwe millennium stond voor de deur, dus wij maakten wat en zetten op 27 december 1999 ‘The Sound of the Millennium’ op een zelf gebrand cd’tje. Een hit is dat natuurlijk nooit geworden, maar op de zeeverkennersvereniging waar we lid waren hadden we wel een paar ‘fans’. Zelf muziek online zetten was destijds volgens mij nog te veel gedoe. Jaren later dachten we nog wel eens terug aan dit nummer, maar we konden het allebei nergens meer vinden. Of we hadden de software niet meer om het project te openen. We moesten maar accepteren dat we ons elektronische gestamp nooit meer zouden horen. Maar deze week vond ik die CD-R ineens weer. Het was tien dagen lang druilerig rotweer, maar wij zaten toch de hele dag in die studio, dus daglicht hebben we sowieso nauwelijks gezien. We namen acht nummers op. Gedurende 2020 hebben we nog zaken toegevoegd en veranderd en vijf van die nummers hebben we deze week uitgebracht.
